Let every space inspire the artist within with The Studio / SculptureSept 14, 2016
SHAW HOSPITALITY, FBFA EXPLORE THE SCULPTURE PROCESS

Shaw Hospitality and Farmboy Fine Arts recent curated collaboration, The Studio / Sculpture, explores the process of sculpture and translates line work and form into custom tufted broadloom carpet for public and private spaces.

The collection, the second collaboration between Shaw Hospitality and FBFA, is inspired by well-known and emerging artists. While exploring patterns, FBFA deconstructed forms into geometric shapes and studied the line work and depth of light. The resulting collection is a mix of raised relief, subtle optical illusion and a whole new three dimension of curvilinear form, shapes and facets.

“From the pencil drawings and sketched studies, to cutting a palette knife through clay and using building blocks to create depth, we realized that it all came down to how we followed this universal line through space. We started to realize that the line was the point of translation between 2D and 3D forms,” said Felicity Carter, FBFA senior designer.

These artistic studies became the design catalyst for the collections’ corridor and rug patterns. The Studio / Sculpture patterns are applicable for hospitality, retail, healthcare, education and workplace and are designed to be customized in scale and endless yarn color possibilities.

At Shaw Hospitality, we believe that everything matters. Constructed with Eco Solution Q® nylon, the products in this collection are Cradle to Cradle Silver & assessed for impact on health + the environment. These products are recyclable and contribute to LEED. The Shaw Hospitality lifetime commercial warranty covers abrasive wear, tuft-bind, edge ravel and delamination.

Perfection in form and beauty: Noble MaterialsNov 20, 2015
Shaw Hospitality introduces a luxury collection for public & private spaces

For the newest design award-winning collection, Noble Materials, Shaw Hospitality designers studied the charts and diagrams ancient alchemists meticulously plotted in the search to transform base metals into noble metals, such as gold, silver and copper. Layered in luxury, modern marquetry is interpreted via pattern and data-inspired inlays for an exquisite flooring statement.

Noble Materials was named Best Flooring in the BDNY 2015 Product Competition.

Shown in tones of deep grays and navy with a gold metallic accent, the tufted carpet collection is customizable in more than 280 colors. With multiple field, broadloom, rug and corridor patterns, plus a collection of 24 inch x 24 inch carpet tiles, the collection color palette and pattern scale can be changed to create customizable looks. Noble Materials is a design catalyst that translates to various manufacturing technologies.

Cell Theory brings depth and luxury to hospitality interiorsOCT 8, 2015
David Rockwell partners with Shaw Hospitality in 3rd collection

The microscopic structure of plant life unveils intricate patterns and organic shapes in Cell Theory, a carpet design collaboration with David Rockwell and Shaw Hospitality.

A liquid wash overlay, inspired by the science of fluid dynamics, provides an ethereal view of the microscopic in the broadloom custom carpet patterns. The collection explores the luxe beauty of the most basic units of design, a living cell.

“Cell Theory is a continuation of our exploration of natural elements, both micro and macro,” said David Rockwell, Founder and President, Rockwell Group. “We re-imagined the intricate shapes and patterns of plant cells to create a carpet collection that will add rich layers of color, depth and texture to any hospitality setting.”

The multiple field, corridor and rug patterns in Cell Theory work in harmony to visually interpret the intricacies in the natural world around us. The collection’s neutral palette and luxe textures can be combined and layered to create customized looks.

Cell Theory is a design catalyst that translates into various manufacturing technologies. Dye-injected print, tufted and CYP (computerized yarn placement) offer high-quality plush aesthetics to accommodate hospitality projects for guest rooms and public spaces.

TRANSFORM YOUR SPACE AND SPIRIT WITH THE PARKMAY 7, 2015
SHAW HOSPITALITY REDEFINES DESIGN BOUNDARIES WITH NEW CARPET COLLECTION

Join Shaw Hospitality at Hospitality Design Expo 2015 in a transformation of space and spirit with The Park, a collection of carpet tile and broadloom patterns designed to enhance our mood and minds.

A renewal of space and spirit, these patterns are a celebration of the fundamental human experience enjoyed through public parks. Shaw Hospitality designers were inspired by the parallels of how we move, gather and enjoy different zones of a park and how those zones correlate to hospitality interiors and transition from communal, energetic experiences to a quiet, singular moment.

“The collection was designed to be transformative - in thinking, in people and in space,” said Maria Scott, Shaw Hospitality Director of Design. “Our goal is to reinforce and demonstrate that through great design, balance can be achieved in the spaces we gather, play and escape. In hotel lobbies, as in a park, we see guests enjoying being alone, together. Amidst the hustle and bustle, individuals taking a moment to gather their thoughts or gather together; a moment to appreciate the importance of human connectivity or time to pause and reflect.”

The Park broadloom and carpet tile in 18 x 36 in. and 9 x 36 in. formats offer options tailored for public spaces as well as guest rooms. Shown in neutral shades with a pop of energetic chartreuse, the palette reflects renewal and vitality. The broadloom and carpet tile products, which are constructed of Eco Solution Q® nylon, offer a lifetime commercial warranty covering abrasive wear, tuft bind, edge ravel and delamination. Additionally, they are recyclable and manufactured with recycled content, while offering a sustainable flooring solution that contributes to LEED certification.

This carpet can be reclaimed at the end of its useful life and processed through our portfolio of internal recycling technologies.

Welcome to The Studio / Painting: create, connect, inspireDECEMBER 23, 2014
Shaw Hospitality, FBFA explore the painting process; launch carpet collection

An artist can spend a lifetime mastering a single work. The Studio / Painting, the first collaboration with Shaw Hospitality and Farmboy Fine Arts, explores this process, juxtaposing control with spontaneity, showing what it’s like to be an artist ... to be human.

What happens when paint meets canvas? Does it hold strong or separate to create something new? The result: corridor, rug and field carpet patterns that reflect the liquidity of paint, variable viscosity and artist’s detail with patterns such as tilt, gesture, flow, daub, ink wash and brush stroke.

“Our inspiration comes from the artistic process,” said Todd Towers, CEO and founder of FBFA. “This collection with Shaw Hospitality is an extension of the painter’s exploration of their medium, discovering the many results that can occur when paint meets canvas. It’s about reimaging textiles with gestural design — an opportunity for individual expression.”

This carpet can be reclaimed at the end of its useful life and recycled into new carpet again.

Natural Curiosities adds intrigue to hospitality interiorsAugust 29, 2014
David Rockwell partners with Shaw Hospitality in 2nd collection

Life under a magnifying glass conveys a new sense of place with Natural Curiosities, a carpet collection by renowned architect David Rockwell and Shaw Hospitality. Like Layered Luxe, the first collaboration between Rockwell and Shaw Hospitality, Natural Curiosities further explores elements found in nature.

With this collection, Rockwell drew inspiration from cabinets of wonder from the 19th and 20th century, where rich arrays of exotic and colorful specimens were on vivid display. These elements intrigued and inspired in a variety of different patterns; some patterns explore the effect of light and shadow on natural surfaces, while others reflect a more textural and abstract approach.

“Birds and butterflies drew us into the world of the curious,” said Rockwell, President of Rockwell Group. “We playfully interpreted these designs in different scales, patterns and exotic color palettes to bring a high-end residential look to hospitality environments.”

The 27 field, corridor and rug patterns in this collection work in harmony to visually interpret the intricacies in the natural world around us. The design approach captures a micro view of our world, making the ordinary truly extraordinary.

Natural Curiosities is a design catalyst that translates into various manufacturing technologies. Dye-injected print, tufted and CYP (computerized yarn placement) offer high-quality plush aesthetics to accommodate hospitality projects for guest rooms and public spaces.

Design Journey: Cloth & Stone receives Award of Excellence Flooring at HD Expo 2014June 2, 2014

The Shaw Hospitality and Shaw Contract design team spent three weeks exploring remote locations in India, Cambodia and Laos, seeking out ancient crafts still being made as they were centuries ago.

Design Journey: Cloth & Stone is an interpretation of the indigenous crafts of the lands where the design teams journeyed. This collection of 25 tufted carpet patterns for hospitality public spaces and guest rooms was named the IIDA / HD 2014 Award of Excellence Flooring – Carpeting recipient at HD Expo in May.

Stone carving, the inlay technique Pietra Dura, hand-woven textiles and the art of miniature paintings, which are created with crushed semiprecious stones, were a few of the crafts the team explored. Design Journey: Cloth & Stone conveys a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beautiful craftsmanship of these ancestral art forms.

“There is no substitute for the fully immersive experience of learning about each craft from a master artisan. The inspiration and vibrancy of our experiences flow through this new collection,” said Maria Scott, Shaw Hospitality design manager. “The designs offer customers a modern interpretation of centuries old crafts. We pay homage to those artisans who keep the authenticity of the art alive today.”

*As with all Shaw Hospitality carpet collections, Design Journey: Cloth & Stone is manufactured with Eco Solution Q® nylon, which is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Eco Solution Q contains 45 percent recycled content, consisting of 20 percent pre-consumer and 25 percent post-consumer recycled content.*

This carpet can be reclaimed at the end of its useful life and recycled into new carpet again through the Shaw Industries Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility in Augusta, GA. Since 2009, Shaw Hospitality has diverted more than 1 million pounds of post-consumer carpet from U.S. hotel renovations.

*Recycled content is based on allocated nylon fiber from our total nylon fiber production and determined as a percent of total Eco Solution Q nylon output. Actual recycled content will likely vary.

Shaw Hospitality Carpet Donation Highlights TED2014April 16, 2014

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the TED conference, some of the world’s most captivating thought leaders gathered in a one-of-kind theater installed in the LEED Platinum Vancouver Convention Centre. During the March 2014 conference, speakers and attendees enjoyed the beauty of Shaw Hospitality’s Layered Luxe carpet, which was designed in collaboration with David Rockwell and Rockwell Group, the theater’s architecture and interior design firm.

The Crease carpet pattern – with its abstract, hatching lines – reflects Rockwell Group’s interest in combining organic forms with linear divisions. The new TED theater is designed to be rapidly assembled and disassembled annually, and its cutting-edge design will have less than 2% waste once all the building components are processed.

“Shaw Hospitality is an innovator in manufacturing high quality, sustainable flooring,” said David Rockwell, founder and President of Rockwell Group. “We’re thrilled that Shaw has generously supplied carpet collections, including Layered Luxe, for the new TED theater. The richness and depth of the carpets will contribute to the venue’s dynamic environment for years to come.” TED – a platform for ideas worth spreading – started in 1984 as a convergence of technology, entertainment and design, and today the conference shares ideas ranging from science and business to global issues in more than 100 languages. More than 50 speakers addressed attendees this year, including notable speakers Bill and Melinda Gates, former Arizona legislator Gabby Giffords, “Eat, Pray, Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert and astronaut Chris Hadfield.

Recognizing that attendees primarily go to TED for inspiring talks and social activity, Rockwell designed the theater with 10 different seating options provided by Steelcase, including benches, lounge seating, chairs and a standing area where attendees can blog without disturbing the audience. All of these seating arrangements intimately surround the stage, which also features Shaw Hospitality red carpet.

Befitting the LEED Platinum certification of the Vancouver Convention Centre, the Shaw Hospitality carpet is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. The carpet is manufactured with Eco Solution Q nylon, containing 45 percent recycled content, consisting of 20 percent pre- consumer and 25 percent post-consumer recycled content.* Contributing to LEED certification, Layered Luxe is manufactured with safe and healthy ingredients and has a reduced environmental impact across the entire lifecycle of our product.

Shaw Hospitality’s carpet will be reused again in future TED theater installations. After the end of its useful life, the carpet will be reclaimed and recycled into new carpet again through Shaw Industries Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility in Augusta, GA. In the last five years, Shaw Hospitality has diverted more than 2 million pounds of post-consumer hotel renovation carpet from U.S. landfills.

*Recycled content is based on allocated nylon fiber from our total nylon fiber production and determined as a percent of a total Eco Solution Q output. Actual recycled content will likely vary.

Shaw Hospitality launches collection with David RockwellNovember 8, 2013

Layered Luxe extends organic textures, natural form to hospitality flooring

In its latest collection, Shaw Hospitality partners with renowned architect David Rockwell on a new collection of broadloom carpets for the hospitality market. Layered Luxe, which is inspired by elements found in nature, combines organic forms with linear divisions to create tonal shifts of richness and depth.

Launching at Boutique Design New York in November 2013, Layered Luxe elevates hospitality flooring with the shifting light of semi-precious stones, smoked crackle of Japanese raku pottery and texture of comfortably worn, weathered textiles.

“This collaboration is the result of a longstanding relationship between our studio and Shaw Hospitality,” said David Rockwell, Founder and President of Rockwell Group. “We’ve always admired Shaw Hospitality’s commitment to producing sustainable products and their ability to create high-quality, detailed expressions of our designs.”

Inspired by the richness of opulent, well-worn vintage rugs and the patterns of geodes and semi-precious stones such as lapus and malachite, Layered Luxe connects rich material surfaces with modern, chic hospitality environments. The collection includes an abstract Tiger’s Eye design overlaid with a shifting grid, a herringbone pattern with tonal shifts, and motifs in distressed and weathered finishes.

Though shown in sophisticated neutrals, Layered Luxe is customizable with a palette of more than 270 Eco Solution Q solution-dyed nylon and unlimited skein-dyed nylon color options.

As with all Shaw Hospitality carpet collections, Layered Luxe is manufactured with Eco Solution Q® nylon, which is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Eco Solution Q contains 45 percent recycled content, consisting of 20 percent pre-consumer and 25 percent post- consumer recycled content.*

Layered Luxe can be reclaimed at the end of its useful life and recycled into new carpet again through the Shaw Industries Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility in Augusta, GA. Since 2009, Shaw Hospitality has diverted more than 1 million pounds of post-consumer carpet from U.S. hotel renovations.

Shaw Hospitality wins Two awards at HDMay 15, 2013

Shaw Hospitality won Best of Show for Flooring and Best of Competition for the Be Bold collection at the 2013 Hospitality and Design Expo and Conference. Held annually in Las Vegas, HD is the premier trade show for the hospitality design industry, bringing together more than 900 exhibitors and 7,000 attendees to Las Vegas each May. Presented by Hospitality Design magazine, the show is at the forefront of the newest and most innovative products and services, encouraging and sharing ideas, providing inspiration and connecting the industry.

Be Bold is a fearless statement of layering patterns, color and texture. Graphic elements and dynamic black and white patterns create contrast and scale to transform a space. The innovation lies in the system of patterns, holistically designed to migrate throughout the space, and which implements five transformation techniques to create a seamless experience for the user. Patterns communicate through layers to create endless design options—limited only by the imagination.

“We are honored to receive Best in Show for flooring and the Eric Engstrom Best of Competition awards. This validates our efforts to provide the hospitality industry with the highest quality flooring designs and products and marketing that truly inspire design creativity,” said Sam Barry, Director or Retail and Hospitality Markets for Shaw Hospitality Group.

Inspired by architectural elements and organic movement, the collection explores the juxtaposition between delicate, crystalline, linear shapes and dense concentrations of overlapping structures.

The collection’s range of small and large scale patterns are a design catalyst that will translate into various manufacturing technologies. Tufted, CYP and dye-injected print offer high-quality plush aesthetics to accommodate hospitality project budgets for guest rooms and public space. The patterns are applicable for hospitality, and designed to be customized for the user’s style. Designers can choose from a color bank of 288 solution-dyed colors for tufted and CYP carpet and 720 for dye-injected print.

The carpet nylon contains 45% recycled content and is Cradle to Cradle Certified by MBDC, and contributes to LEED points. Cradle to Cradle backing is also available. This product can be reclaimed from renovation sites, where it is sent to the manufacturer’s recycling facility where it will become new carpet again in an endless, closed-loop process. Tufted carpet is backed by a lifetime warranty covering abrasive wear, static protection, stains and colorfastness.

Shaw Hospitality introduces new Vivid Palette CYP patternsNovember 7, 2012

The six new Vivid Palette carpet patterns by Shaw Hospitality created with computer yarn placement (CYP) tufting technology explore natural dyeing and the use of these hues to dramatize lustrous fibers and luxurious texture./p>

Woven, twisted, bundled – the result is unpredictable, random and beautiful. Shown for the first time at Boutique Design New York, the six new CYP public space patterns complement the Vivid Palette print and tufted products launched earlier this year.

During product color experimentation, the design team partnered with Savannah College of Art and Design, challenging students to create original fiber art projects using natural dyed fibers. Overarching techniques from the students’ work such as potato dextrin resist dying; fabrics created from folding, stitching and bundle dyeing with Osage orange and black tea; and an intricate weaving from the Costa Rican Cabuya fiber became pattern inspiration for the collection.

“Traditional hand-dyeing techniques and the SCAD art defined the organic patterns that create depth and luxury of Vivid Palette,” said Maria Scott, Shaw Hospitality Group Design Manager. “We continued the textural exploration of this CYP collection by showcasing tufting technology to create striking cut and loop patterns.”

Vivid Palette CYP is customizable with more than 270 Eco Solution Q® solution-dyed nylon and unlimited skein-dyed nylon color options. Eco Solution Q nylon is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Eco Solution Q contains 45 percent recycled content, consisting of 20 percent pre-consumer and 25 percent post-consumer recycled content.*

Vivid Palette can be reclaimed at the end of its useful life and recycled into new carpet again.

Actual recycled content will likely vary. .

Find your center with Central Square by Thom FiliciaAugust 1, 2012

Find Your Center with Central Square by Thom Filicia for Shaw Hospitality

In the heart of the city lies a place where the architectural edge meets the organic core; where the hard, angular, classic lines of the urban landscape join the soft, free-flowing curves of nature. This very spot is where designer Thom Filicia found his center with Central Square, a tufted and Eco Evolution™ print carpet collection by Shaw Hospitality.

As with any Shaw Hospitality collection, Central Square is completely customizable. Find your center with suggested colors and patterns for public spaces and guest rooms. Or, create your own bespoke look. Either way, these print and tufted carpet designs will make your hospitality space as inviting as the European streets that inspired them.

“Sometimes it’s hard to tell where the architectural edges end and the natural world begins, where geometric lines meet free-flowing form,” said Filicia, who partnered with Shaw Hospitality to create this sustainable carpet collection. “Central Square captures the juxtaposition of classic and organic. By day it’s light, airy and sun washed. Or, change the color to create Central Square by night, a dark and urban sophisticated color palette.”

Central Square Eco Evolution™ print and tufted carpets are manufactured with Eco Solution Q® Nylon, which is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Eco Solution Q contains 45 percent recycled content, consisting of 20 percent pre-consumer and 25 percent post-consumer recycled content. COLOR EXTRACTED FROM NATURE, REINTERPRETED FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WITHINMay 15, 2012

Vivid Palette: color extracted from nature, reinterpreted for the environment within

Vivid Palette by Shaw Hospitality explores color extracted from natural dyes and the merger of these organic colors with texture. Woven, twisted, bundled, dipped and dyed – the result is unpredictable, random and beautiful. The collection is the fabric of nature and nurture, reinterpreted for the environment within.

During color experimentation, the design team partnered with Savannah College of Art and Design, challenging students to create original fiber art projects using natural dyed fibers. Overarching techniques from the students’ work such as potato dextrin resist dyeing; fabrics created from folding, stitching and bundle dyeing with rust and eucalyptus; and an intricate weaving from the Costa Rican Cabuya fiber became the pattern inspiration for the collection.

“The natural dyes of beets, madder root, onion skins and rust opened our designers’ eyes to a brave new color palette. These colors, combined with traditional hand-dyeing resist techniques of the SCAD art, defined the organic patterns that create depth and luxury of Vivid Palette,” said Maria Scott, Shaw Hospitality Group Design Manager. “The collection explores how color bleeds through texture like dye seeping through an open weave. This ancient art of natural dyeing and patterns are undeniably modern.”

Vivid Palette is comprised of tufted and Eco Evolution™ dye-injected print carpet patterns for guest rooms and public spaces. Tufted carpets are customizable by choosing from more than 270 solution-dyed nylon options; Eco Evolution print can be customized with more than 720 colors.

Vivid Palette tufted and Eco Evolution™ print carpets are manufactured with Eco Solution Q® Nylon, which is Cradle to Cradle certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Shaw Hospitality reclaims 1 million pounds of carpet; diverts waste from nation-wide landfillsMay 15, 2012

Shaw Hospitality reclaims 1 million pounds of carpet; diverts waste from nation-wide landfills

Since the inception of its recycling program in 2009, Shaw Hospitality has reclaimed more than 1 million pounds of carpet from hotel renovations throughout the United States.

Through key partnerships with major hoteliers such as La Quinta Inns & Suites, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Marriott and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, this 500 tons of reclaimed carpet has been diverted from U.S. landfills. A commitment to sustainability, attentive customer service and an established reclamation program led La Quinta Inns & Suites to partner with Shaw Hospitality Group in 2009.

“Over the past several years, Shaw Hospitality has provided carpet for La Quinta’s hotel renovations. Through our partnership with Shaw, La Quinta has diverted nearly 800,000 pounds of old carpet from landfills to recycling centers without a significant impact to our renovation budget,” said Murry J. Cathlina, La Quinta Inns & Suites EVP Design & Construction.

Shaw Industries coordinates the reclamation process; the old carpet is staged at the property during the renovation process and then transported to one of Shaw’s recycling partners. Whenever possible, type 6 nylon carpet from these renovation sites is sent to Shaw Industries’ Evergreen Nylon Recycling Center in Augusta, Ga., where it enters the recycling process of becoming new carpet again. Here it is broken down into caprolactam, the building block of type 6 nylon carpet fiber, and made into new type 6 nylon again without degrading the quality or performance of the fiber. Other types of carpet fiber reclaimed during renovations are reprocessed into other products or used in waste-to-energy facilities.

La Quinta purchases Shaw Hospitality Eco Solution Q® type 6 nylon products for its renovation projects. When this carpet is ready to be replaced, it can go to Shaw’s Evergreen facility and become new Cradle to Cradle Silver Certified type 6 nylon carpet again through the recycling process.

“In many cases, the cost for Shaw’s recycling partner to pick up the carpet from the hotel is about the same as having the contractor take it to the landfill. Participating in this recycling makes sense for La Quinta because it is easy to manage, cost-neutral and benefits the environment,” Cathlina said. “There are many carpet manufacturers who offer a quality product; however, Shaw offers a quality product plus competitive pricing, outstanding service and the best recycling program in the industry. I look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come.”

Shaw Hospitality recently reclaimed the guest rooms carpet from the 221-room Monaco Portland, a Kimpton hotel. The property, which is housed in a 100-year-old downtown Portland building, opened in 1996, and the remodel was completed in March of this year.

New carpet, wall coverings and furniture updated the guestrooms during the remodel. Shaw Hospitality removed 27,620 pounds of old carpet from Monaco Portland and replaced it with new Cradle to Cradle certified, sustainable carpet.

“Everyone at Kimpton is guided by the same vision. Our Kimpton EarthCare™ program works because each one of us is making critical behavioral changes on a daily basis,” said David Sussman, SVP Hotel Development & Design, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. “Our commitment to the environment requires both dedication and real ingenuity, and Shaw Hospitality’s reclamation program is another way that Kimpton commits to sustainable practices.”

This sustainable, closed loop nylon type 6 recycling program is the model of Shaw’s Cradle to Cradle philosophy – designing so that waste is never an option. The premise of Cradle to Cradle design is to create products that will be deconstructed and recycled back into their original materials time and time again. Cradle to Cradle product design and certification are an integral part of Shaw’s commitment to Sustainability through Innovation™.

Shaw Industries has reclaimed and recycled more than 500 million pounds of post-consumer carpet since 2006 — enough to cover 14,663 football fields. The Carpet America Recovery Effort named Shaw its Recycler of the Year in 2009.
